Another witty, endearing and tender novel from the author of Rise and Shine, about the messiness of love, midlife and marriage - and how one tiny action is not tiny at all and has the capacity to upend everything - if we let it.

Davis, Catherine and Andrew have been friends for years, since meeting at university. Catherine dated Davis for a while and it ended badly. Catherine started talking to Andrew to make Davis jealous, and then somehow, twenty years later, there they are, Catherine and Andrew, celebrating eighteen years together, with jobs and a mortgage and a two-year-old. In the meantime, Davis married Izzy and they have two teenagers. Catherine is an editor at a publishing house; and for the last ten years has been writing a novel she's never told anyone about. Andrew is a high school English teacher with a burning idea for a novel he's been looking for an excuse to write. Davis works in finance.

Most Friday nights the two families get together to eat and drink, sometimes at Catherine and Andrew's old, falling-down Queenslander and sometimes at Davis and Izzy's impossibly white, glossy, beautiful home. And this is how they could spend the rest of their lives until one Friday night, around the fire pit, while everyone else is in the house, Davis and Catherine do something that changes everything.
