THE FLICKERING BEAM

we all have an old flashlight in the kitchen drawer that’s seen better days. Most of the time it works fine, but every so often, the batteries start to fade. The beam doesn't just go out; it starts to flicker. It gets dim, then bright, then dim again, leaving you squinting in the dark, shaking the thing and hoping for one more good burst of light to get you to the fuse box.

I think a lot of us live our spiritual lives in that flickering mode. We’re not totally "dark," but we’re dim. We’re running on the fumes of a victory from three years ago, or the remnants of a faith we had in college, and we're just shaking the flashlight, hoping we have enough energy to make it through another Tuesday.

"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." Psalm 119:105

Notice the verse doesn't say the Word is a stadium floodlight. A lamp doesn't illuminate the whole forest; it just shows you where to put your foot for the very next step.

When you feel your light flickering tonight when you feel depleted and dim stop trying to light up the next ten years. You don't need a map of the whole journey; you just need enough light for the next step. God provides exactly enough for the immediate need.

Tonight, stop shaking the flashlight. Just take the one step He’s showing you.
