Someone recently told David Boim he dreamed too big, his response? “You think too small.”
It’s a challenge to the ceilings we place on our businesses through what we believe is possible, who we surround ourselves with and what we’re willing to question.
In this Bee Formless™ Flow Driven CEO conversation, I connected with David Boim, business strategist, CEO mentor and Founder of DSB Exit Strategy, to explore thinking bigger, leadership capacity, strategic execution and meaningful change.
Having helped scale and sell 17 companies over 35 years, David has seen how founders can become the greatest obstacle to their own growth.
He shared the story of a software company that took 20 years to reach $13 million in revenue. Its founder believed he’d taken it as far as he could. By bringing in experienced leaders and learning to delegate, the company grew to $50 million in three years and was ultimately sold for $500 million.
The shift wasn’t only commercial, the founder had to change how they led.
We explored why revenue growth doesn’t always create business value, how a new sales channel transformed another company, and why an ambitious vision needs commercial discipline and execution.
David also shared a childhood story that revealed where his belief in change began. Following the 1963 Birmingham church bombing, his father asked what he would do about injustice. That question helped shape David’s lifelong conviction that ordinary people can change the world, a belief he has carried into business, activism and mentoring other CEOs.
Approaching 75, David continues exploring AI, learning and challenging convention, just as he did when he arranged his high-school classroom in a circle to encourage students to question and learn from each other.
We returned to a confronting leadership question: when does the person who built the business become the one holding it back?
THE SHAPE SHIFT IN MOTION
What becomes possible when we challenge our own limitations and create the leadership, strategy and capacity to realise a bigger vision?
LEARN: DIAGNOSE • UNDERSTAND • SUBTRACT • CHALLENGE
✨ Recognise when the thinking, behaviours and capabilities that built a business have become limitations on its future growth.
✨ Look beyond revenue to understand profitability, cash flow and the wider commercial consequences of strategic decisions.
UNLEARN: REIMAGINE • RESHAPE • CREATE
✨ Challenge the need to know everything or remain involved in every decision, making space for people with greater expertise to lead.
✨ Reimagine established approaches when a different business model, channel or leadership structure could unlock greater value.
RELEARN: TEST • IMPLEMENT • EMBODY
✨ Connect ambitious vision with strategy, execution and accountability, continually reshaping the plan as circumstances evolve.
✨ Build a culture where questioning, ongoing training and shared learning become part of how the business operates.
ACTIVE RECOVERY: INTEGRATE • RESTORE • EVOLVE
✨ Create leadership capacity by developing others rather than becoming the single point of failure in the business.
✨ Move from simply embracing change to living it, remaining curious and willing to evolve at every stage of life.
