Synopsis: These talks describe the historic development of the Al-Anon fellowship from Bill and Lois Wilson's unique perspective giving a deep insight into what Al-Anon really is and what it does. June 23, 1951 Salt Lake City, Utah. (At this time there were Family Groups, but no official Al-Anon Fellowship) Bill was on a tour of west coast AA groups, but the Salt Lake City talk is to a special gathering of the earliest Family Groups and their representatives. Bill speaks very highly of enthusiasm for Family Groups on the West Coast of USA. A very upbeat talk, he tells how the wives of sober alcoholics often feel like the hen who hatched a duck egg, and the damn duck is on the pond, and will that duck be home to dinner, well you don't know maybe... The idea of this story is that being the partner of a sober alcoholic can be a lonely experience, and a fellowship dedicated to their own social and spiritual development is needed. How in the first AA clubhouse the partners of the sober drunks met, to the great anxiety of the sober drunks. The development of Family Groups, dedicated to healing their own distortions. Note About Bill W talks at Al-Anon World Services Conferences: Bill spoke by invitation at the events open meetings, but had no role in the group conscious meetings. In Al-Anon World Services talks, among other things, Bill explains how the Al-Anon World Services Conference is a practical application of Tradition Two, where the representatives of the groups function as the Group Conscience; the voice of every individual in the administration of the whole. Bill emphasizes the essential role of AWS which is linking Al-Anon to its individual members and serving the needs of the fellowship. Also, among other things, Bill recounts in a general way how Al-Anon grew from the cake and coffee auxiliary into an independent fellowship dedicated to the recovery and happiness of its members. The anxiety of sober alcoholics over their partners having meetings of their own and its role in the development of Al-Anon is a recurrent theme. In One Talk Bill Says: Even from the earliest times there was very naturally a deep kinship in experience and suffering between those who had been our partners. So, in a way, there has always been an Al-Anon all along. There was this exchange of experience, there was this attempt to apply the 12 Steps, there was this attempt to understand the erring boy, who may still be erring even though sober. I think there was a deep yearning to belong, and due to the rather exclusive nature of AA you never felt you quite belonged.Al-Anon fills a need that just attending open meetings never could. Finally, near the end of Bills life, Bill, to the extent that he can with advanced emphysema and Lois speak to the General Services Conference (probably the closing ceremony with many Al-Anon members attending). Bill opens with a spirited, Hi folks, he talks for just two minutes, introducing Lois. There is true joy in his voice but speaking is difficult for him. Lois gives a beautiful talk about the early days of AA, when their home was continually full of drunks. She says, some of them stayed sober, a while, for quite a long while, but a lot of them got drunk and did all kinds of remarkable things, very remarkable things. She then recounts a few of these remarkable things, including a little fat man who lived in the basement, and he did some quite interesting things (like getting stuck in the bathtub). Someone had to pull him out of that thing, and that someone was me. After Lois finishes, Bill says a few more very heartfelt words, and then closes by saying: Thanks for the privilege of being with you, of which Lois joins with me, thankfully.©2026 Thomas Laperriere (P)2026 Thomas Laperriere
