Dharma Katha · Season 2: Navratri · Episode 97
After the darkest night comes the brightest form. Last night belonged to Kalaratri, black as a moonless sky, riding a donkey, her hair wild. Tonight's Goddess rides a white bull. She is dressed in white. She is radiant, the tradition says, like the moon, like the conch shell, like jasmine. Her name is Mahagauri. The great bright one. And the story of how she became bright is a story about what happens after a very long effort.

Source note. Label: tradition, with one verse. Mahagauri as the eighth of the nine Durgas is from the Devi Kavacham's list, quoted in episode sixty-nine. The dhyana verse, śvete vṛṣe samārūḍhā, her iconography, and the story of Parvati's bath, with the dark sheath becoming Kaushiki, were read on brhat.in, which names Manasarovar; other tellings name the Ganga, or tell it differently. The Devi Mahatmya's own account of Kaushiki and Kalika is chapter five, as in episode seventy-five. The yogic centre and the offering of coconut are later and living tradition, and vary. The reflections, including on the order of the seventh and eighth nights, are my own. A Sanskrit reader should confirm the verse.
