Welcome To The Oddity Shop, Where The Bizarre is Always on Sale. This Week, Your Curator Kara has a vampiric tale just in time for spooky season.
A dead farmer falls off a wagon, breaks his neck, and gets buried like anyone else. Then the village starts saying he’s back at night, choking people in their sleep and leaving a trail of sudden deaths. We’re heading to 1720s Serbia on the Habsburg military frontier, where fear travels fast, folklore runs deep, and the modern idea of the “vampire” hasn’t been sanitized into pop culture yet.
We tell the story of Arnold Paole, a former border militia fighter who insists he survived an attack by a Slavic vampire and tried to cleanse himself with a grim ritual involving grave soil and corpse blood. When villagers demand an exhumation, what they claim to see sets off the classic anti-vampire response: staking, decapitation, burning, and ashes dumped into the river. Years later, another wave of deaths forces the Austrian government to send military doctors to investigate, leading to a report titled Visum et Repertum that spreads across Europe and ignites Enlightenment-era debate.
Come along for the ride, and try not to lose any sleep!
