Tuesday, October 6: In this first episode of our series on grace, John unpacks the grim reality that Paul begins with: “You were dead in your transgressions and sins.” This isn’t a metaphor for feeling bad—it’s a statement about spiritual lifelessness. John explores the first-century Jewish understanding of sin as missing the mark and being enslaved by spiritual powers. Paul’s audience, surrounded by pagan religion and Roman imperial propaganda, lived under the illusion of freedom but were spiritually dead. John contrasts this with modern life—how we too “follow the ways of the world,” driven by the cravings of the flesh and the ruler of the air. Yet, even here, grace’s story begins: God’s mercy doesn’t wait for us to clean ourselves up. We’re reminded that we don’t drift toward God; we’re rescued by Him. Grace isn’t a rescue mission we earn—it’s one that interrupts our lostness.
