In Episode 3 of Mind in Plain Sight, we explore the psychology of conformity why other people can influence what we say, what we choose, and sometimes even what we believe.

We revisit the classic Asch conformity experiments, examine what modern research says about their limits and replications, and unpack the difference between normative influence going along to fit in and informational influence assuming the group may know something you don’t.

We also investigate why unanimity matters, why one dissenter can dramatically change group pressure, how uncertainty increases social influence, and why public agreement doesn’t always mean private belief.

Then we bring the science into everyday life:

ratings, reviews, likes, trends, workplace culture, friend groups, social media, and the invisible pressure created by simply seeing what everyone else is doing.

We ask:

Why do intelligent people still conform? Can a crowd change what we actually perceive—or mainly what we’re willing to say? Why does one person disagreeing make it easier for others to speak up? What is pluralistic ignorance? When is following the group irrational and when is it actually smart? And how much of what feels like our own judgment was shaped by the people around us first?

The deeper question is:

Are we following the crowd or has the crowd already changed what feels true?
