President Donald Trump has announced a new federal task force called the Super Intelligence Force. According to China Daily, the group will coordinate government efforts on artificial intelligence and engagement with technology companies, consumers, public interest organizations, and critical infrastructure providers. Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton will lead the task force, alongside Federal Trade Commission Chairman Andrew Ferguson, Pentagon technology official Emil Michael, and Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor. The group will report to President Trump and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. The announcement follows a White House meeting with major technology companies. According to the White House fact sheet cited by China Daily, participating companies agreed to voluntary safety standards and stronger internal reviews of artificial intelligence systems. Immigration and election policy remain major administration priorities. USA Today reports that the administration has increased efforts to investigate noncitizens on voter rolls, while federal agencies have also begun sending five hundred dollar Affordable Care Act rebate checks to nearly one million Americans in thirty states. The administration’s actions are drawing attention as the midterm elections approach. The Supreme Court begins its new term today with several cases tied to President Trump’s policies. The Associated Press reports that the justices will consider disputes involving immigration detention, deportation procedures, climate litigation, and gun rights. The court’s decisions could affect the administration’s immigration enforcement program and the limits of presidential authority. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is traveling to Iceland today, according to Agence France-Presse. He is expected to discuss economic and security cooperation as the United States increases its focus on Arctic interests. That is the latest from Washington.
