Despite extensive coverage in the press and the terrifying parallels to the September 11th attacks, the incident has been largely forgotten. By retelling this captivating tale, this book will introduce readers to a little-known chapter of Civil War history and will expose how the increasingly desperate Confederate government turned to terrorism as a strategy during the final months of the conflict.
Furman Daniel weaves together the details of this complex Civil War-era spy thriller from the development of the initial plot, an international investigation after the incident, and the trial and execution of a key Confederate plotter. The result is a thrilling true crime adventure set in the streets of New York City.

This book shines a penetrating, fascinating light on an underestimated, half-forgotten aspect of the [American] Civil War. It uncovers episodes in the conflict that show that human agency and the tools and tradecraft of espionage and unconventional activity in wartime are largely unchanging, even if the technologies, military applications, and contexts evolve over time.
A comprehensive, readable, account of the largely forgotten Confederate attempt to burn New York City, in the autumn of 1864, potentially causing literally thousands of deaths while disrupting the Union war effort. Daniel offers a look at the origins of the conspiracy, the plotters, and Confederate special operations in the war. We get to see New York at mid-century, a bustling city, vital to the Union war effort, but one with complex social, political, and racial tensions. He traces the movements of the plotters, as they develop their plan, and at the people charged with defending the city. The culmination of the plot, on November 25, 1864, is covered in considerable detail, as Daniel traces the movements of the conspirators, their failure to cause significant damage, their efforts to escape the intensive police dragnet, following some men to safety, and some to the gibbet. A tale well-told, and one that reads like a fast-paced thriller.
J. Furman Daniel tells the exciting story of the Confederates who tried to destroy New York City — and how their efforts failed. Even if you think you know the Civil War, you do not know this enthralling chapter.
J. Furman Daniel has provided a fresh new lens through which future historians may reconsider the war between the southern states and the industrial north. Daniel uses the clandestine operations of Confederate operative Robert Cobb Kennedy to highlight key historical dynamics which have remained largely unexplored in the historiography. Terror being a tactic in war, Kennedy faced the gallows for his treasonous plot to burn New York. Given this history, Daniel has provided an interesting new analysis of treason, Confederate espionage, and the messier questions concerning contemporary debates of history.
