Soviet submarine K-278 Komsomolets was the crown jewel of the Cold War undersea arms race—a titanium-hulled nuclear attack submarine capable of diving deeper than any military submarine in history, and armed with a full complement of torpedoes and cruise missiles. But on April 7, 1989, a fire broke out while the sub was cruising more than 1,200 feet beneath the Norwegian Sea.
