Scary stories for brave kids. Maya is five, and she's the only one who sees the monsters. Her brother Leo is eight and has never once believed her — mostly because he was asleep.     Leo says eight-year-olds don't nap. Leo has never napped in his entire life. Allegedly.


    It's a foggy Saturday, and at one o'clock Maya decides she's big now — she's going to lie in bed with her eyes open and skip her nap on purpose. Moose won't come in the room. And there's a very old rule about that. Everybody has a Grumble, and naps aren't for you. Naps are for the thing inside you.


    Tonight, one hour at a time: a yawn that comes out wrong. Grey eyes in the dinner window. Nails that click on the blanket. And something in Maya's pajamas walking down the hall toward Lily's room.


    Maya's warning: this one's closer than the others. Get under a blanket.

    It's a foggy Tuesday night in California. Leo has snuck a whole bag of strawberry gummies into the bedroom and pushed the wrappers under Maya's bed — and there's a very old rule about that. Snacks bring guests.


    Tonight: something under the bed. Then something not under the bed anymore. Moose the dog does the worst thing a dog can do. And Maya learns why you should never, ever eat what a monster is made of… unless it tastes like strawberries.
