In May of this year, automated internet traffic passed human traffic for the first time in history — and infrastructure providers now estimate that gap could widen to a thousand times human traffic within five years. Most of that shift isn't just bots reading content. It's AI agents starting to shop, compare, and buy on behalf of the people they work for.
That raises a harder question than "can Google find you." It's "can a machine with zero brand loyalty and infinite patience find you — and trust what it finds?" Agents don't get swayed by a slick ad or a convenient location. In theory, that should level the field for small businesses. In practice, agents reward whoever has the deepest verifiable track record — reviews, fulfillment history, documented outcomes — and new entrants simply don't have that yet.
Jeff Payne breaks down why this is Proof Over Proximity showing up in a new arena, why "leveling the field" for AI agents can actually tilt it toward consolidation, and the one audit every business owner should run: if something with no emotions and unlimited time researched your business today, would it find enough to trust you?
