In the summer of 1518, something bizarre happened in Strasbourg.
One woman reportedly began dancing in the street—and couldn't seem to stop. Within days, dozens of others had joined her. Eventually, hundreds were said to be caught up in the strange outbreak.
Authorities tried an equally strange solution: they brought in musicians and created places where people could dance it out.
But the dancing continued.
What caused it? Mass illness, extreme stress, religious belief, or something else?
More than 500 years later, there is still no definite answer.
