Michael Edwards was a plasterer from Cheltenham who became Britain's first Olympic ski jumper largely by being the only man in the country who volunteered. At Calgary in 1988 he finished last in both events — in borrowed boots stuffed with socks, a helmet tied on with string, and spectacles that fogged under his goggles so badly he left most ramps unable to see the landing.
