April De Angelis
April De Angelis award winning radio plays
April De Angelis is an award-winning playwright and writer, her work spans theatre, radio, and television, blending sharp wit with deep emotional insight. She was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2020. Her plays have been produced by the Royal Court, National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company, Hampstead Theatre, and the West End. April's play Jumpy was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award in 2012 for Best New Play.
Like many dramatists of her generation, de Angelis was deeply affected by the Thatcherite policies of the 1980s and themes from this era of the power struggles and the rise of a new wave of feminism is present in a lot of her work.
The Outlander – When 14-year-old Gayle is picked on at school, her life becomes linked with some young Polish people in the Second World War. Won the Writers Guild Award in 1992.
Visitants (1988) – A black comedy of female and bug liberation
Cashcows - Black comedy about a circle of women who are bound together by guilt - and cash. Built on the same model as Schnitzler's La Ronde, each episode contains two two-handed comedies, until the last character meets the first.
Sweet Dreams - While Kate struggles to come to terms with life as her son prepares to leave the nest, her confidante and neighbour, Sarah, gains the strength to finally let go.
Cast includes:
Anna Massey, Adjoa Andoh, Rosie Cavaliero, Indira Varma and Elizabeth Spriggs
