Ash and Timber is the opening novel in Caleb Rowan’s historical fiction series, The Mercer Bloodline. Set against the raw and unforgiving landscape of early nineteenth-century America, the story follows Thaddeus Mercer, a young man shaped by blood, fire, loss, and survival.

Born of two worlds, Thaddeus carries the heritage of his Scottish father and Cherokee mother. His childhood is shattered when violence comes to his family’s mountain cabin, leaving him marked by grief and forced into a life where strength is not a choice but a necessity. Raised in the shadow of loss and taught by hard country, old wounds, and the dangerous silence of the wilderness, Thaddeus grows into a man who understands that survival demands patience, skill, and a willingness to do what others cannot.

As the years pass, Thaddeus carves out a life in the Carolina mountains. He learns the rhythms of the land, the value of solitude, and the price of vengeance. But his world changes when he rescues Ahyoka, a Cherokee woman left badly beaten and near death beneath the winter trees. What begins as an act of mercy becomes something deeper, drawing Thaddeus toward love, family, and the fragile hope of building a future from the ruins of the past.

Together, Thaddeus and Ahyoka attempt to create a home in a world that rarely allows peace to last. Their bond is tested by old enemies, frontier violence, political unrest, and the gathering storm of the War of 1812. When the war reaches toward him, Thaddeus is forced to choose between the home he has built and the fight that may determine whether that home can survive.

Ash and Timber is a story of legacy, frontier hardship, cultural identity, revenge, loyalty, love, and endurance. It explores what remains after everything has burned, and what kind of man can be shaped from the ashes. Rich in historical atmosphere and emotional depth, the novel introduces the Mercer family line with a sweeping story of courage, loss, and the long road toward destiny.
