A fast paced young adult story of Keith Johnson, a 13 year old boy and his older brother, who are hired to guide an eccentric old man search the mountains of the Four Corners area of the American Southwest for a legendary Spanish silver mine. The story gets complicated when Mr. Copley brings his granddaughter along. Interwoven with the modern story are the long ago tales of Yellow Feather, a Native American boy whose village developed the mine, and Benito, a Mestizo cook traveling with a party of Spanish conquistadores seeking to find and develop the mine. All face various challenges that test and ultimately help them mature. To his surprise, Keith discovers that he can be friends with a girl. Lightly sprinkled in is some history of the American Southwest, Pueblo Indian creation stories and simple Spanish vocabulary.
