あらすじ・解説

Because of the potato me and my family left our home and travelled 6,000 miles to find a new life....

Slim Hannigan and her family are poor but happy. Theirs is a life filled with love and laughter - and a pet pig called Hamlet.

But things change overnight, and suddenly they find themselves facing hunger and danger like they have never known.... So they leave their village in Ireland to journey to America, where, they hope, family and fortune await them.

Slim soon finds herself living a life that feels just like one of those far-fetched stories her Da has always told. Can one brave girl keep her family together no matter what is thrown at them....?

A Surprise

Would you listen to A Slice of the Moon again? Why?

Yes, I was surprised by this book. It moved me to tears several times and gave me laughs and goosebumps!!

What did you like best about this story?

the factual nature of the subject matter that was humanised by a wonderful family.

What does Lisa Dwan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Her accent was authentic and she acted all that parts perfectly.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

It was a time of Love, It was a time of famine, it was time for and adventure....

Any additional comments?

I wish there was a book two...

Adults should read this too...

You won't be able to get Slim and her family out of your head for days. I hope there’s a sequel.

Beautiful story telling and insight

I was really interested in the history of the Irish potato famine and thought this would be wonderful way to gather a personal account albeit in a story format. Wonderfully written and beautifully told (though the odd accent was a bit sketchy!) disappointed that the next will have a different narrator. But throughly recommend for all ages!

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!

What a clever lady Sandi Toksvig is, because she was interested in the plight of the Irish and couldn't find a book which told of the personal stories, she decided to write one herself!
Being of Irish heritage myself, I found this book both fascinating and disturbing. I was completely consumed the whole way through and felt that I knew the characters by the time the story came to an end. Have already downloaded the second book "The End of the Sky"
Thank you so much for giving us a book that all generations can read and learn the truth about this disaster!

Excellent story, brilliantly written.

What a fabulous story covering the horrors of the potato famine and emigration to America. The characters are interesting and although at times the story is quite harrowing, I really wanted to know the next chapter.

A wonderful listen and a wonderful lesson

Beautifully narrated, this book, recommended to me (37F) by my niece (10F). It is well told, factually very accurate and full of many lessons including the difficult subjects of loss and the pitfalls of greed. Wonderfully descriptive, Toksvig has painted the perfectly correct picture of two seperate countries which, at the time, were places of everything and nothing all at once. I will go on to listen to the rest of the series.

Wow, What an emotional journey!

This book is absolutely fabulous, beautifully written, and delightfully narrated by Lisa Dwan with her wonderful lilting voice.

I would like to see a ‘next in the series’, I feel so invested in this Irish family and would like to know how they got on in the next part of their voyage. Sandi Toksvig is a wonderful writer, I found tears in my eyes on several occasions, and I shared the family’s love and joy too.

I have just discovered that there is a next in series.... The End of the Sky, I’m off to download it now.

Very slow. I couldn't finish

This was a recommendation in a children's magazine so I downloaded for an intelligent 9 year old who didn't fancy, so I listened by myself.

I'm afraid even I found this boring and so slow. I was tempted to give up after chapter 1 but told myself to give it a chance. After 3 chapters it was time to concede defeat. The chances of a 9-year old enjoying it was slim.

The story itself was very worthy - the plight of a poor family during the potato famine. But I'm afraid the narration didn't help lift the story. Shame, as the Littlest Viking by Sandi Toksvig was great.
