A tender and powerful contemporary literary novel about Hijra kinship, chosen family, poverty, illness, paper, memory and the search for a place to be held without proof. In Dhaka, Nuri knows that papers can open doors, close rooms, rename bodies and make a person smaller before breakfast. At the clinic, the form has no place for her. At the NGO office, the blue folder knows her category more easily than her name. In the market, men laugh, pay, insult and ask for blessings. At home, Firoza keeps the household ledger in a biscuit tin: routes, debts, medicine, rent, rice, police tea, borrowed money, small humiliations and the fragile records that keep a room from forgetting itself. The room is crowded, sharp-tongued, funny, frightened and alive. It is not soft. It does not pretend poverty is beautiful. But it is the place where Nuri, Shapla, Parul, Juthi, Bonna and Firoza make a life out of what the world refuses to protect. When illness deepens, water rises elsewhere, and family papers begin asking for old names, the household must decide what it means to keep a place for someone who has been pushed outside too many doors. A fund is opened. A ledger is renamed. A house too poor for certainty begins to practise witness.Written with restraint, tenderness and moral force, A Place to Rest is a contemporary literary novel about Hijra life, chosen family, Bangladeshi social realities, poverty, illness, burial, memory, kinship and the ordinary mercy of being held without proof.A place to rest is not where trouble fails to enter. It is where something of you stays warm after it does.©2026 William Gomes (P)2026 William Gomes 大衆小説 文芸小説
