あらすじ・解説

Caroline Evans is a single mom trying to raise her 15-year-old daughter, Issy, as best she can. Her ex-husband, James, was a philandering charmer, and a wealthy one at that. Their life had been lavish, but Caroline couldn't put up with his cheating and left him, taking Issy with her. And Issy has never forgiven her for this.

Now, they live in the countryside outside London, where Caroline has built a modestly successful catering business, and Issy is now at an all-girls boarding school. Things are beginning to feel normal. But when James mysteriously appears on her doorstep one night and then vanishes soon after, Caroline feels her world being turned upside down once again. Delving into a world of high-stakes finance she knows little about, Caroline and Issy must find a wary peace, and solve a murder. And Caroline also finds herself guarding a wounded heart against yet another man who seems determined to win her over.

With trademark twists and turns and memorable characters, Elizabeth Adler delivers another summer getaway novel that will leave you gasping for more.

Quite Enjoyable

If you could sum up A Place in the Country in three words, what would they be?

A pleasant"read"

What did you like best about this story?

I liked that this woman moved on from her hurtful past.

What does Charlotte Anne Dore bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I liked her articulation. Really liked listening to her.

Any additional comments?

I enjoy Elizabeth Adler and this book was no exception. I have never had an audio book of hers before, so this was new. Not a disappointment.

Enjoyable

I very much enjoyed this audio book. It’s not going to be a top favorite book but it’s very pleasant. I felt the narrator was too easy on her ex-husband but in the end that didn’t really matter. Would recommend for anyone looking for a casual listen or beach read.

Overall pretty good

Let’s see…

Things I liked: I genuinely liked the MC. I enjoyed her story. I felt like her character was believable. There was some intrigue and a murder mystery but you have to wait about half way through the book. I enjoyed the slow build of the characters and her new home and the process- details. The supporting characters were good. I wouldn’t mind following some of them in other books. Not everything, every side plot or character has a tidy little bow and I’m ok with that.

Things I disliked: The daughter. Yes she’s immature and young but she’s disrespectful and sometimes downright cruel to her mom. Yes it happens. Yes it’s believable. But I felt like little was done to address her behavior until nearly the end of the book. Even the MC just seemed to accept whatever the daughter wanted because golly she must really be hurting.

The author, in the end, did allow the young girl some growth though. So there’s some redemption by that I think. This is not a writing complaint, to clarify. I just found her character really annoying. :)

Writing dislikes: I didn’t like that the MC’s love interest - we just don’t get to know him really well. About as much as any of the supporting characters. He’s not really a main character, imo. But he’s a genuinely nice guy. You pick up that much.

I also did not like how much the author covered so many point of views. The MC, her daughter, the “bad guy’s”, her mothers etc. I feel that it was distracting and detracted from the overall experience. I think that time could have been better spent to get to know the MC’s love interest.

Overall this is a story about the MC and her daughter. Their journey of life after divorce then death, starting over and making their own way. The romance is there but it’s really secondary to everything else that is going on.

There is a little sex but primarily at the end and it’s not really gratuitous and I appreciated not having to do a lot of skipping.

The narrator did a fine job with reading and pacing. It does meander a bit with detail but sometimes that can be enjoyable. I wasn’t in a rush to get to the end. I enjoyed the ride, so to speak. At the very end, is a menu and it quite made me want to look up the dishes and cook them. Bon Apetit!

A Wonderful Entertaining Listen

I loved this book. I couldn`t stop listening and I finished it in less then a day. It was...family, mystery, love, acceptance and the day to day life of the amazing characters. There were also twists and turns in the lives of most main people of the story. The reader, Charlotte Anne Dore made the story even better. She was very good pick. I will look for more by this author the this reader.

I can’t believe I finished it!

If I hadn’t been busy with other things while listening, I would have stopped it after about 10 minutes. The story was weak and personalities so unbelievable and I didn’t even like them.
For all the attention payed to names I found it insulting that someone decided to mispronounce Jesus throughout the reading.

Good listen for commuters

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Absolutely, considering I have a 45 minute commute to and from work. This book kept me entertained.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Well, that's hard to say. I guess I'll go with the dynamic between mother and daughter being the most interesting, and the dynamic between mother and lover being the least interesting. Or maybe it's the other way around.

Did Charlotte Anne Dore do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

I would have to say yes - I was able to easily identify each character by the sound of the narrator's voice.

Did A Place in the Country inspire you to do anything?

Honestly, not really, other than to visit England before I die.

Any additional comments?

This book could have been so much more. The mystery of who kills the ex-husband was so shallow that it was predictable. I expected a web of mystery that never appeared. In the end, this book was entertaining to listen to while it lasted, but it fell short of being a great book. Definately not the best audio book I've ever listed to.

Filthy mouths detract from story.

Not at all the sweet-sounding mother/daughter story portrayed in summary. Boring besides Did not finish. Glad I didn't waste a credit.

Boring

The narration was very well spoken. The narrator could have done better with the male voices. The storyline was interesting when I first read the description but as I got into it I realized I made a mistake.

The main characters are dull. There isn't any excitement and it is all very predictable. I couldn't even finish the book. I will not be reading any other books by this author.

A Narrator With an English Accent is Needed

Kept on to the end but with difficulty. The pronunciation of certain words were very jarring, Aga being a prime example. An English accent may have improved the tedium of the story especially as the story is mainly set in England and about English characters.

Great life story

What sounded boring in the beginning unfolded into an interesting life story,
full of twists and turns. Heartbreak, new beginning and love. Nothing missing.
Very well told.
