Odell Buckenflush Chronicles is a collection of river tales from a career in outdoor education. Blending experiential learning with humor, these stories highlight environmental impacts and decision-making in the outdoors. While humorous, each tale offers a lesson for adventurers.
This book serves as both education and entertainment for outdoor leaders, teachers, camp counselors, and resource managers. As Paul Petzoldt noted, “People in outdoor settings should learn from their experiences,” and these tales provide ample examples of “what just happened.”
Not a treatise on learning theory, this collection showcases different learning styles, as humorist Will Rogers put it: “Some learn by reading, some by observation, and others by peeing on the electric fence.”
Each of the five volumes follows the same structure, with 48 tales divided into four chapters:
- Inventions and Achievements
- Family Connections
- Rescue and Survival
- Philosophy and Life
Each tale concludes with a “Tale of the Tale,” revealing real-life inspirations. A Glossary of River Terms adds both accuracy and humor, while multiple Appendices cross-reference:
- Rivers and locations
- Previously published tales
- Outdoor subjects
- Buckenflush characters
Dr. Odell Buckenflush is a mix of real people, folklore, and imagination—perhaps you’ll see yourself in these tales.
