In the glittering city of Aligera, built on towering stacks above a broken land, residents fly using solar-powered wings.

At graduation, Zerene, Thoosa, Vesper, Jac and Iora must choose the wings that will decide their place in society. As the top student, Zerene is free to take the first pair of two coveted Butterfly wings. He chooses the green wings, knowing his sister, ranked second, will appreciate the sapphire-blue pair. But Thoosa shocks everyone as she bypasses the Butterfly wings and chooses Bat wings, renouncing her title and opting to join the Colony who patrol the chasms. Ambitious Iora, meanwhile, is sure there’s rot at the top of Aligera – and a pair of Butterfly wings will help enormously with her plan to expose it.

As the five take their first flight as adults, they soon discover their whole world is built on corruption. And each of them has a role to play in the revolution to come …
