No conto "O ideal da condessa", uma fina ironia move Valentim Magalhães na caracterização da condessa, constituída sobre a própria narrativa – nada mais do que a substituição de um amante por outro, sem que nenhum lhe satisfaça. Já em "Objeto de amor", o leitor encontra um daqueles exemplos crus de textos realistas – praticamente uma pintura escrita, a expor a tormenta do personagem Eduardo.

No conto "Sede de sangue", Teixeira Gomes flerta com o sobrenatural, deixando abertas diversas possibilidades de interpretação. O narrador, do gênero "voyeur", observa de seu escritório tudo que acontece na taberna do Sr. Trovas e sua esposa Balbina Catada, "antiga marafona que ele desposara em Lisboa". Com riqueza de detalhes descritivos, a narrativa desemboca na chegada de uma misteriosa cigana.
