Andrew Jukes (1815-1901) was an English theologian and deacon of St. John's Church, Hull. The Names of God in Holy Scripture (1888) examines the Old and New Testaments to find and interpret the names of the Lord.

Rev Prof Alexander Balmain Bruce (1831-1899) was a Scottish theologian and minister of the Free Church of Scotland. Published in 1871, The Training of the Twelve is an ambitious biography and classic study of Jesus' selection and training of his apostles. A chapter is dedicated to each of the 12 (Bruce includes sound arguments on the identity of the three unnamed apostles) in which the different traits and circumstances of each apostle is discussed.

This is Leo Tolstoy's integration of the four biblical gospels into a single account of the life of Jesus. The Gospel in Brief is an intriguing fusion of biblical texts and Tolstoy's own religious views. Tolstoy explains that his goal is a “solution to the problem of life," not a theological or historical statement. He therefore ignores issues like Jesus' genealogy and divinity, focusing instead on the words and teachings of Jesus, stripped of what he regarded as the Church's distortions and focus on dogma and ritual.

James Denney was a Scottish New Testament scholar, pastor, and theologian (1856 - 1917). The author was convinced that the death of Christ was not given the proper importance in the common Christian mind, measured against its centrality in the New Testament. The purpose of the evangelical and theological work The Death of Christ is thus to explain the place held by the death of Christ in the scriptures, and the interpretation put upon it by the apostolic writers.

John Flavel (1627-1691) was an English Presbyterian clergyman, puritan, and popular author. Christ Altogether Lovely is a short meditation on the life and work of Jesus Christ. The text is introduced by a quote from The Song of Songs: "This is my beloved, and this is my friend." (Song of Songs 5:16). Flavel highlights Christ's offices as prophet, priest, and king, and his relations to Christians as savior, advocate, bridegroom, and friend.

The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew chapters five to seven) is one of the most beloved passages of scripture. The Sermon is the longest continuous discourse of Christ in the New Testament and includes some of his best known teachings like the Beatitudes and the Lord's Prayer. The theologian Clarence Larkin (1850-1924) examines each chapter in The Book of Daniel and its meaning. It includes a chapter on the dream of King Nebuchadnezzar and Daniel’s interpretation of it. Published in 1918, the book prophesied the re-establishment of the State of Israel.

William Lyon Phelps (1865 - 1943) was an author, critic, and scholar. He had a radio show, wrote a daily syndicated newspaper column, lectured frequently, and published numerous popular books and articles. "Human Nature in the Bible" (1931) is an essay about the curiosities of human nature. Phelps looks at the Bible from another perspective than those based simply on dogma.
