La guerra civil española es un acontecimiento que sin duda ha marcado decisivamente la época contemporánea en España. Ninguno otro ha tenido la repercusión externa y, lo que es mucho más importante, interna, en el devenir de la España de los últimos dos siglos, la España de la Contemporaneidad.

Este curso está dirigido a quienes se interesan por el pasado de la ciudad de Sevilla.En él se hace referencia a las distintas etapas de su historia desde su fundación hasta nuestros días. Especial atención se dedica a la Sevilla musulmana y a la Sevilla Puerta de Indias durante los siglos XVI y XVII.Al mismo tiempo se describen las huellas monumentales y artísticas que han pervivido en la ciudad y que constituyen un reflejo de la riqueza patrimonial que acumuló durante cientos de años.

Dentro del conjunto de ciudades del mundo cuya sola denominación recuerda un pasado de excepcional grandeza histórica y cultural, Córdoba figura con méritos propios en uno de los lugares preeminentes: más de cuatro mil años de historia durante los cuales el viejo suelo cordobés sirvió de asentamiento a pueblos y culturas que, en rico mestizaje, dejaron su huella y modelaron los perfiles multiseculares de la Córdoba de hoy.

El presente curso tiene como objetivo abordar los aspectos históricos y culturales de la denominada "Atenas española", "Roma la Chica" o La "Reina del Tormes". Perfila los principales eventos desde sus orígenes castrenses hasta la actualidad, haciendo especial énfasis en su Universidad que ha marcado a lo largo de los siglos la fisonomía y el devenir histórico de la ciudad.

Una potencia imperial es aquella que determina e incluso decide el comportamiento del conjunto de la comunidad internacional, en política, economía, tecnología, y cultura. Durante los siglos XVI y XVII España ejerció ese papel. De ese imperio aun existen signos visibles de su potencia e influencia, más allá de la comunidad de países hispanohablantes.
