La prefazione illumina sulle intenzioni dell'autore e sul significato dell’opera: «Crescano e fioriscano intorno all’antica tomba della mia giovane madre myricae autunnali […] Mettano queste poesie i loro rosei calicetti intorno alla memoria di mia madre, di mia madre che fu così umile, e pur così forte, sebbene al dolore non sapesse resistere se non più di un anno. Io sento che a lei devo la mia abitudine contemplativa cioè, qual ch’ella sia, la mia attitudine poetica.
