Die Stadt ist für ihn nun leer, kalt, unwirklich und voll schmerzlicher Erinnerungen. Das lyrische Ich hat seine Geliebte wohl nur still und heimlich angebetet, ohne es ihr zu gestehen oder seine Liebe zu zeigen. Liebe ist am schönsten als Sehnsucht, als Verlangen und Schmachten, dessen Erfüllung nicht unbedingt erwünscht ist.

"Lieder" ist eine kleine Sammlung von Lyrik aus Heinrich Heines Feder. Er gilt als einer der bedeutendsten deutschen Dichter, Schriftsteller und Journalisten des 19. Jahrhunderts. Er war einer der letzten Vertreter und zugleich einer der Überwinder der Romantik.

„Lyrisches Intermezzo“ entstand 1821-22: Der Zyklus hat eine Art Handlung, die vom Mai bis in den Winter reicht.
