In this sermon, English preacher Charles Spurgeon uses candles to illustrate spiritual concepts. Jonathan Edwards, often referred to as America’s greatest theologian, lived from 1703-1758, and was used by God in the American Great Awakening. This sermon warmly encourages every person to make the same kind of effort that Ruth made in leaving her people and country to join herself to God and his people in Israel. Edwards used a variety of things to stimulate the unbeliever toward faith and repentance, such as: the goodness of God, the happiness of his people, the misery of turning back as Orpah did, and the earnest desire of God’s people for every hearer to be saved.

Edwards opened the sermon by defining “pressing into” the kingdom, explaining why every one should earnestly seek it. He reminded the hearers that, by nature, all are in a perishing necessity of salvation, utterly lost when outside the kingdom.

John Wesley led one of the greatest Christian revivals in the history of England. The Forty-Four Sermons which he compiled for use by Methodist preachers remains a timeless classic and a definitive collection of the core Wesleyan doctrine. "Awake Thou that Sleepest!" is the third message from the Forty-Four Sermons. It was originally preached by Charles Wesley, on Sunday April 4, 1742, to the congregants at Christ Church, University of Oxford.
