Le Federal Bureau of Investigation ("Bureau fédéral d'enquête"), ou très couramment nommé par son sigle FBI, est, aux États-Unis, le principal service fédéral de police judiciaire et un service de renseignement intérieur. En 2010, la juridiction du FBI recouvre plus de deux cents catégories de crimes fédéraux, faisant du FBI l'organisme d'enquête majeur du gouvernement américain. Ses attributions incluent l'antiterrorisme, le contre-espionnage, le crime informatique et la médecine légale.

Wilhelm Canaris est un amiral allemand, responsable de l'Abwehr, le service de renseignement de l'armée allemande, de janvier 1935 à février 1944. Richard Sorge est un journaliste allemand et soviétique. En poste en Allemagne et au Japon, il est surtout connu pour son travail d'espion au Japon au service de l'URSS, avant et au début de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Son nom de code au NKVD était "Ramsay". De 1933 à 1934, Sorge édifie au Japon un réseau pour collecter des informations au profit du NKVD. Sorge rejoignit officiellement le parti nazi, le parti national socialiste (NSDAP), et travailla comme agent de l'Abwehr à l'ambassade allemande locale.

Kim Philby est un important officier du Secret Intelligence Service (SIS ou MI6) britannique. Il devient célèbre lorsqu'est révélé qu'il a été un agent des services de renseignement soviétiques, tout le long de sa carrière. Philby est affecté au poste de Premier Secrétaire à Washington en 1949. Les Américains le soupçonne d'avoir transmis aux Soviétiques des informations confidentielles sur le programme nucléaire militaire et de leur avoir dénoncé différentes opérations de déstabilisation de l'URSS.

Guy Burgess était un membre du Secret Intelligence Service recruté comme agent par les services soviétiques. Il appartenait au groupe d'espions connu sous le nom des Cinq de Cambridge qui trahirent leur pays pendant la guerre froide. Burgess transmit notamment des documents secrets britanniques et aida un autre agent soviétique, Kim Philby, à rejoindre à son tour le SIS. Il devient après la guerre secrétaire du ministre d'État aux Affaires étrangères, Hector McNeil, et transmet des documents secrets du Foreign Office au KGB.

Le Special Operations Executive (SOE, "Direction des opérations spéciales") est un service secret britannique qui opère pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.
