D’origine métisse, Riel est né dans la colonie de la rivière Rouge, dans l’actuel Manitoba. Aîné d’une grande famille, il quitte les siens à 13 ans pour venir étudier à Montréal. De retour chez lui 10 ans plus tard, Riel, par son charisme et son éducation, s’impose rapidement comme leader et s’engage dans la défense des Métis. Il réussira, non sans mal, à faire valoir plusieurs de leurs droits et contribuera à la création de la province du Manitoba, mais sera finalement jugé pour haute trahison et exécuté en 1885.

Jacques Cartier prépare minutieusement son premier voyage. Comme il est soutenu par le roi de France, il parvient à lever son équipage.
