Samuel de Champlain est le véritable père de la Nouvelle-France. Navigateur, cartographe, écrivain, ethnographe, il avait une vision : celle d’installer une colonie française sur les bords du Saint-Laurent. Il a toujours manifesté un grand respect pour les nations amérindiennes qu’il a côtoyées. Malgré tous les obstacles rencontrés sur sa route et les multiples voyages qu’il a dû effectuer entre la France et le Nouveau-Monde, il n’a jamais cédé, jamais fait de compromis.

On le surnomme l’Indien blanc. Tout jeune, Étienne Brûlé commence sa vie d’aventurier en s’embarquant comme mousse sur le Don-de-Dieu, commandé par Samuel de Champlain. Quelques années plus tard, il se porte volontaire pour passer un an dans une tribu de la grande famille des Hurons afin d’apprendre leur langage et leurs coutumes. Peu de temps après, il adopte le mode de vie des Hurons et passe de nombreuses années à faire des expéditions de toutes sortes. Un héros attachant et hors du commun, à la vie mouvementée et trépidante.

D’origine métisse, Riel est né dans la colonie de la rivière Rouge, dans l’actuel Manitoba. Aîné d’une grande famille, il quitte les siens à 13 ans pour venir étudier à Montréal. De retour chez lui 10 ans plus tard, Riel, par son charisme et son éducation, s’impose rapidement comme leader et s’engage dans la défense des Métis. Il réussira, non sans mal, à faire valoir plusieurs de leurs droits et contribuera à la création de la province du Manitoba, mais sera finalement jugé pour haute trahison et exécuté en 1885.

Jacques Cartier prépare minutieusement son premier voyage. Comme il est soutenu par le roi de France, il parvient à lever son équipage. Le 20 avril 1534, il assiste à la messe et au sortir de l’église, toute la ville l’accompagne sur les quais. La foule en liesse veut assister au départ de ce grand personnage auquel rien ne résiste. Il appareille avec deux navires ornés du drapeau fleurdelisé, symbole de la royauté. C’est le départ pour la grande aventure. En moins de trois semaines d’une traversée assez tranquille, Jacques Cartier passe au large de Terre-Neuve.
