En el siglo XV discurre en Cataluña y Levante bajo la influencia de las dos grandes escue­las renacentistas europeas: italiana y flamenca. En Castilla la pintura del siglo XV sigue un rumbo diferente que hemos de analizar con más detalle. Ante todo, hemos de decir que se nota un sensible retraso entre los estilos renacentistas de Cataluña y Castilla. Es un retraso espacial, puesto que Cataluña se halla en contacto directo con los focos franceses, y mantiene con Italia un ininterrumpido comercio marítimo.

El siglo XVIII coincide con la gran explosión cultural europea que se conoce habitualmente como Ilustración, y cuyo corazón reside indudablemente en Francia. La Ilustración es un fenómeno cultural de corte político y literario, pero también se proyecta con cierta originalidad en las artes plásticas, sobre todo en las de su potencia fundamental -Francia- y en algunos otros pueblos que aprovechan la ocasión para luchar por su libertad política y cultural en general.

Ya hemos dicho que Flandes es la otra zona europea en donde surge el Renacimiento artístico, tanto desde el punto de vista cultural y filosófico, como puramente estético. Italia y Flandes son las cunas del Renacimiento europeo y en consecuencia también lo son del arte europeo de esta época. Como ocurre con la Baja Edad Media, ambas zonas mantienen sin embargo su personalidad de un modo muy específico. No se puede confundir una obra italiana y otra flamenca de la misma época, aunque ambas resultan revolucionarias y sorprendentes comparadas con las de anteriores periodos.
