Explorer Probe VI, a spacecraft launched by NASA in 1972, was designed to investigate the outer bodies of Neptune and the lesser dwarf Pluto. The probe was the flagship of the Explorer series. It was programmed with the latest artificial intelligence enabling it to survive on its voyage for many years in distant, cold interstellar space. This artificial intelligence was endowed with a capacity for being almost self-aware.

It is 2061. Benjamin Privett wins an annoyingly small prize in the lottery. He sees this as just more evidence of his frustrating life. Nobody is more surprised than him to find that it is, in fact, a selection for an unparalleled epic adventure that changes his life and the future of mankind.

In 1944, two United States Army Air Corps Officers are recruited for a mission—a "TOP SECRET" mission to coincide with another. Between departing England and arriving in Australia, their shuttle airplane is attacked by Japanese fighters. However, the planes are reduced to dust by blasts fired from an untraceable source. Awaiting the pilots, Colonel Jeremy McCloud and Colonel Kevin Stillwell, are new orders to sail to Albany, a small whaling town in Western Australia, on board the United States submarine, USS Javelin.

With Earth becoming overpopulated, the nations of the world finally come together to create a space program that will replace NASA. The program PROBES (Project Research Observational Based Exploratory Stations) will help to extend man's existence and increase his knowledge of the universe and life around him. Captain Robert Novus and his crew on the Starfire soon discover life forms unwilling to allow man to explore the universe.

It was just supposed to be another day at the tanning salon, nursing a hangover, and hitting on a stripper and her girlfriend. But a doctor with an idea to cure the world of all sickness thought it was a good idea to use alien blood and DNA for the cure. Too bad the alien has other plans.

The President and Vice President are elected from two different parties. They are old friends, but a conflict develops when the possibility of actual alien contact is discovered. A multitude of characters are infused into the relationship between the two.
