I am open; these words are my sutures. Shades is an attempt to reconcile who I am as a man, with a society that seems to be fluctuating and struggling at every turn. I show my encounters with family, religion, queerness, heartbreak, COVID-19, and politics. This is a look at my life in 2021, shown through poetry.

Tender the River captures in verse the history and legacy of the Merrimack River Valley, from the Pennacook, Wamesit, Algonquin, and other indigenous tribes who settled there first, to the European settlers who came with guns and their god to supplant them, to being the birthplace of America’s industrial revolution and first labor movements, to becoming a center of continued immigration, of entrenched nativism, and even multicultural celebration.

Stories matter. In this collection of poems and stories that are shaped like poems, Ken Briodagh hopes to say that every story has the potential to educate, titillate, entertain, and stimulate. He also thinks that the most fun and interesting stories come from those places that are deemed “sinful” by authority figures and killjoys (not mutually exclusive). Welcome to Midland is a queer coming-of-age narrative in verse set against the backdrop of conservative, small town Texas. These linked poems explore the cultural and natural history of West Texas (from the horned lizard to dirt storms to Laura Bush’s car accident), connecting events and movements from across eras to create a tenuous yet strong sense of place.

The Lyme Letters is epistolary verse that spells out a memoir. R, a nonbinary femme character, narrates their experience of disease and recovery through recurrent letters to doctors, pets, family members, lovers, and a “Master”. R, in letter form and repurposed religious texts, also explores the paradoxical experiences of queer non-reproductivity, chronic illness and disability, and the healing that can be found in the liminal spaces between.

Mr. Hunter has a passion for expressing his voice through the writing of children’s books and poetry.
