Since the late 1970s, there has been a spread of Islamic fundamentalism or Islamist ideology promoted and sponsored by Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states. More than a billion people are following the religion of Islam worldwide. Islamic fundamentalism or Islamism has helped radicalize a small portion of the Muslim population in every region, and a smaller subset has joined terrorist groups and engaged in acts of terror.
