El Cantar de Mio Cid es un poema épico escrito en verso que nos ha llegado copiado en hojas de pergamino del siglo XIV. Al final de la obra se dice que la copió en 1207 Per Abbat (Pedro Abad). De su manuscrito se copiaría a su vez el que nos ha llegado a nosotros, que se conserva en la Biblioteca Nacional. No se sabe cuándo fue compuesta la obra ni quién fue su autor. Cuenta lo que hace Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, el Cid Campeador, cuando el rey Alfonso VI lo destierra, en 1081.
