Adam and Callie live in a world recovering from devastating plagues that have killed billions. In their rigid society everyone must be ranked as Leet, Mid or Sub. While scavenging in the desert, Jansi stumbles across PIM, a stelcorp starship, embedded in the sand. PIM is damaged and needs the boy's help, but Jansi has never encountered a starship before, much less one capable of thought and expression. It all started as stories - playground tales handed down for generations, stories of plague graves, vanished children and hidden steps leading to a festering underworld. A world so real you could almost smell it.... But when another child goes missing, Fraser wonders if there's some truth in the tales.
