Narcissa Whitman (1808-1847) was a missionary in Oregon Country and one of the first white women west of the Rocky Mountains. She started the Whitman Mission along the Oregon Trail. These are her letters and accounts of missionary work among the Native American tribes in the Columbia Plateau region in what is today Washington state.

Bethany Johnson Veney (c. 1813-1916), was born into slavery in Shenandoah County, Virginia. Her memoir, also called Aunt Betty's Story, chronicles her early life and experiences. After obtaining her freedom, she settled in Rhode Island.

Originally published in1886, the book is about Cynthia Ann Parker, who was captured by the Comanche at Fort Worth in Texas. The tribe adopted her; she married Chief Peta Nocona and spent a quarter century with them.

Through his newspaper, The Liberator, William Lloyd Garrison opposed slavery for 35 years. The policy of the paper was established in the first issue with Garrison's editorial "To the Public", in which he stated that he would "strenuously contend for the immediate enfranchisement of our slave population".

Originally published in 1856, The Kidnapped and the Ransomed is the personal memoir of Peter Still, who was born a slave. He was yoked to servitude for more than four decades in Alabama and Kentucky. Still was finally freed with the help of two Jewish brothers.
