John Dodge was an Indian trader from Ohio at the time of his arrest. This is his account of the treatment he received at the hands of the British commander at Detroit, Henry Hamilton, during the Revolutionary War.

This work by James Williams is one of very few autobiographical texts by Caribbean slaves or former slaves. He served as United States Ambassador to Liberia from 1895 through 1898. His autobiography contains a chapter on men who had influenced his life, and a poem on his life by Ephraim Tyler.

Nat Love, the son of enslaved parents, was born in 1854 on a plantation in Davidson County, Tennessee. In February 1869, Love left Tennessee and found work as a cowboy, first in the Texas panhandle, then in Arizona. Love's story, The Life and Adventures of Nat Love, was published in 1907, and it is considered the only full-length autobiography by an African-American cowhand.

Charles Nordhoff (1830-1901) was a newspaper correspondent, novelist, and traveler. This work, published in 1875, is an extensive report on socialism and communism in their infancy. Nordhoff visited virtually all of the major utopian communities in America to record their history, beliefs, and daily life, and to study their doctrine and literature.

Published in 1855, this history book by William Cooper Nell has an introduction by Harriet Beecher Stowe. It focuses on African American soldiers during the American Revolution and the War of 1812. It is considered by some to be the first history book by and about African Americans which is based on written documentation.
