Henry Shakespear’s book contains gripping accounts of hunting wild animals in India in the mid-19th century, along with supplementary commentary on the breeding and rearing of horses. At that time, the wild beasts of India posed a real threat to villagers as is evident from an 1855/56 report from one district which records 150 deaths caused by bears and tigers. Shakespear provides detailed descriptions based on his personal encounters in chapters like Hog-Hunting, The Man-Eater, Tiger-Shooting, The Panther, The Bear, Bears and Buffalos, Wild Elephants, and The Buffalo and the Bison.

Robert Benjamin Lewis (1802 - 1858) was an African American and Native American author, inventor, and entrepreneur. The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano was one of the first widely-read slave narratives. Eight editions were printed during the author's lifetime, and it was translated into Dutch and German. The narrative appears in a variety of styles and describes Equiano's time spent in enslavement, documenting his attempts at becoming an independent man through his study of the Bible, and his eventual success in gaining his own freedom.

Francis Pretty was a diarist and sailor who wrote detailed accounts of his two separate circumnavigations of the globe. The first was with Sir Francis Drake (1577-1580) and the second with Thomas Cavendish (1588).

King Menuas of Urartu was a great warrior and builder. Urartu centred on the district of Lake Van in Anatolia, but also extended over the Transcaucasian regions of modern Russia and into northwestern Iran in the ninth-sixth centuries BCE. This inscription deals with cities and territories conquered by Menuas.

This ancient lamentation refers to the times of the depredations of the Guti invaders that caused the collapse of the Akkadian Empire towards the end of the third millennium BCE. The text may have been composed after the Elamites carried away the statue of the goddess Nana from the city of Erech (Uruk). It is written in Sumerian with a translation into Babylonian.
