In the 1930s, in the wake of the Nazi ascendancy in Germany, a wave of vicious anti-Semitism swept Europe, as Jews became outcasts in their own lands. As they clamored to escape persecution, the world turned a blind eye to their plight. One man, Isaac Steinberg, had a vision of leading his people from the holocaust to a new paradise on the other side of the world. This story tells of my pioneer colonist forebears and their arrival and settlement in Adelaide, South Australia, in 1838 after many difficult months at sea. They landed only a year after the proclamation of the city of Adelaide. At this time houses were made from reeds from the banks of Adelaide's Torrens River, the port of Adelaide was surrounded by swamp with the area referred to in those early days as "Mudholia" or "Dustholia".

The rare bird's tragic extinction in the early 1900s represents a shot to the heart of Aotearoa and is a potent metaphor for a country's conflicted history. Using the story of the untimely extinction of the huia, J.
