和歌山市の日前・國懸神宮（ひのくま・くにかかすじんぐう）は、紀伊一宮。天照大神の天の岩戸隠れの際に作られた三種の神器の一つ・八咫鏡（やたのかがみ）に先立って作られた二枚の鏡を祀るとされ、日本書紀にも載る、非常に古く格式の高い神社である。その祭祀は、土佐日記の作者・紀貫之を輩出した古代豪族・紀氏により、神代より今に至るまで続けられている。その境内にある中言神社（なかごとじんじゃ）に祀られる名草姫命（なぐさひめのみこと）は、紀氏の祖神の一柱であるが、地元には、名草姫命は日本書紀において神武天皇に逆らい討たれたという、当地の首領・名草戸畔（なぐさとべ）のこととする伝承がある。「名草」とは、紀三井寺の建つ名草山に見られるように、当地の古名であり、「戸畔」とは、女性シャーマンを意味するという。名草戸畔は、討たれた後に首、胴、足の三つに分断されて葬られたとされ、それぞれの地に神社が建っている。頭を葬った地、海南市の小野田には宇賀部神社（うがべじんじゃ）が建つが、その地の名を負う小野田家からは、第二次大戦中フィリピンに赴き、三十年近く潜伏して帰還した、小野田寛郎（ひろお）氏が出ている。古代から現代へ続く紀州の「まつろわぬ」系譜を読み解く。

石川県、能登半島先端部に近い能登町の山中に、岩井戸神社が建つ。その境内には「猿鬼」が住んだという岩屋がある。猿鬼は、能登半島北部に伝わる鬼で、塚や戦場など、数多くの伝承地が残る。その伝説は壮大なものだ。数々の手下を率い、人々に危害を加える猿鬼を、輪島市三井・大幡神杉伊豆牟比咩神社（おおはたかむすぎいずむひめじんじゃ）の杉神姫が、人々の願いにより退治しようとするが、その力に屈し逃げ帰る。そこで神無月、出雲へ行って八百万の神々に相談したところ、能登一宮・気多大社を始め、能登の神々総出で退治することとなる。神々は武装して戦いに臨むが、容易に矢をかわし、掴み取り、漆で塗り固めた全身で弾き返して、剣をも折ってしまう猿鬼達の前に、またしても逃げ帰る。それから、杉神姫が海岸で啓示を受け、筒状の矢の中にもう一本細い毒矢を仕込むことにした。さらに、岩井戸の前で、白い布の下に武器を隠し、酒宴を開いて、天岩戸神話のアメノウズメノミコトさながらに杉神姫が舞い、相手を油断させ、ようやくにして討つことが出来たという。縄文時代の「ウッドサークル」が残る真脇遺跡があり、秋田の「ナマハゲ」と同じ来訪神の行事「アマメハギ」も伝わる能登町の、一大スペクタクルを考察する。
