This is the classic Gothic tale of a family identified with their house; an ailing sister and a neurotic brother live in the middle of a desolate wasteland in a house that has been in their family for centuries. Now, they are the last of the line; the sister is dying and the brother feels he cannot survive her. He enlists a friend to come and stay at the House of Usher, and when his sister dies, terrible things ensue.

This is a story about a young girl who has grown up in the woodland. She spends her time talking to the trees and every other growing and living thing that she encounters while on her expeditions into the woods. It is her inner belief that she herself is a tree. This tale is also interlaced with a story of a man who is a carpenter. It tells of his love of wood and talks of how and why he chooses the trees that he transforms into fine furniture.

On Clemency is a two volume (incomplete) hortatory essay written in 55-56 CE by Seneca the Younger, a Roman Stoic philosopher, to the emperor Nero in the first five years of his reign. From Seneca's remarks, it would appear that it was written after Nero had turned 18, which would place it after the murder of his rival Britannicus in 55 AD. It may therefore have been written partly as an apology, perhaps as a means of assuring the Roman nobility that the murder would be the end, not the beginning of bloodshed.
