Dale discusses the perpetual conflict between Christianity and worldliness. He warns against "the bitter melancholy, this profound discontent with all things in Heaven above and on the earth beneath". Rejecting the concept of "the sanctity of misery" he criticizes the Book of Ecclesiastes and the image of the traditional "Romish Saint", and concludes by saying that for the miseries which we cannot escape, the Divine love affords infinite consolation.

St Francis of Assisi, born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, was a late-12th/early-13th century Italian friar and preacher. Bernardone came from wealthy beginnings, being part of one of the most affluent families in Assisi, but after a year of captivity after being captured by neighboring city’s army after conflict with Assisi flared up, Bernardone's outlook was much changed.

This sermon delivered on March 20, 1864, by Charles Spurgeon deals with the glory of God and with the role of the church.

Hugh O. Pentecost was an American radical minister, anarchist, and Georgist. In this address, first delivered by Pentecost in 1889 at the Unity Congregation in Newark, Boston, he praises the alternative, the outsider, and the vanguards and compares their original ways of living by remaining kindhearted and productive with the ways of Jesus Christ. And he more importantly bridges the gap between anarchy and Christianity with eloquence, persuasive rhetoric, logic, and earnestness.

This is the eloquent account of Jarena Lee’s (b. 1783) religious experiences. After hearing a sermon by Richard Allen, founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, she experienced a spiritual awakening. Lucretia Mott (1793-1880) was a Minister in the Society of Friends, an abolitionist and activist for women’s rights. This speech was delivered at a Woman's Rights Convention in Philadelphia in 1854. She urged her hearers to reject "priestcraft and superstition" and to pursue "true Christianity" and the "word of God in the soul.”

The abolitionist, essayist, teacher, and women’s rights activist Maria W. Stewart is thought to have been the first African American woman to raise matters of equality and justice in a US public forum, the New England Anti-Slavery Society in Boston. In her 1832 lecture, Why Sit Ye Here and Die?, she demanded equal rights for African American women while criticizing both the slavery of the South and the lack of opportunity and equality in the North. Her biblical style of oratory and fierce opposition to injustice still inspire today.
