American Indian Fairytales is a collection of Native American folklore retold for children and young adults. Margaret Compton (1852-1903) drew on authentic lore from a wide selection of regions. The tales include "The Story-Teller Himself", "Snowbird and the Water-Tiger", "The Coyote or Prairie Wolf", and "How Mad Buffalo Fought the Thunder-Bird".

One by the swallow takes the gemstones, and ultimately also the gold plating, stripping the statue bare. But because it waited so long, it succumbs to the cold of winter.

The Princess and the Pea is the story of a prince who wishes to marry a princess but is having difficulty finding a suitable wife. One night a young woman who claims to be a princess arrives at the palace, so the prince's mother decides to test their unexpected guest by placing a pea under her bed, covered by 20 feather mattresses. In the morning, the guest tells her hosts that she had a sleepless night, kept awake by something hard in the bed. So the two are married because only a real princess would be sensitive enough to feel a pea through so much bedding.

Kate Douglas Wiggin was an American educator and author of children's stories, including the classic children's novel Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. The Birds' Christmas Carol, published in 1888, is a novel about Carol Bird, a Christmas baby who turns into an exceptionally kind and generous young girl who has a positive effect on everyone with whom she comes into contact. The story was adapted as the silent movie A Bit o' Heaven in 1917.

She wrote tales of fantasy, magic, and misadventure in which children in normal circumstances are faced with extraordinary characters or events.

Baron Trump's Marvelous Underground Journey by Ingersoll Lockwood was published in 1893. In the short story The Girl Who Owned a Bear, Jane Gladys Brown’s mother leaves her in the care of Nora the maid when she goes shopping. While Nora is busy in the pantry, Jane Gladys works on her embroidery, until a mysterious little man arrives and gives her a large book titled Thingamajigs. When she opens it, the pictures come to life and appear in the room, including a monkey, a donkey, a leopard and a bear. When her mother returns, all of them jump back into the book.

Charlotte Mary Yonge (1823-1901) was a prolific English novelist. The Little Duke, the first of her historical tales for children, was published in 1854. The main character is Richard Duke of Normandy, the great grandfather of William the Conqueror. The first part concentrates on Richard's failings, their punishment, and his reform, and the second part on his virtues. At the beginning of the tale, Richard is a boy of eight who becomes duke when his father dies in 943 AD. His overlord King Louis brings the boy to the French court where his life seems to be in peril.
