Once again Isla returns to Atalan—only this time her best friend Ellie accompanies her. Isla has taken Ellie there to meet the unkerdunkies as a treat for her an upcoming birthday. On their arrival in the unkerdunkies village, the pair are chased through the forest by a mysterious creature. During their escape they run into Fartybubble and Oliver who have also been forced to flee the village from the terrifying beast.

Arabella Twigg is a very ordinary girl, living in an extremely peculiar family. She is the sort of girl that no-one notices but somehow strange things begin to happen to her.

One day, when Arabella looks for some clothes in the cupboard under the stairs, she finds Stuart Whynniard in hiding, who tells her that his father's house is rented out to a group of Englishmen who are planning to blow up the Houses of Parliament. The lead conspirator is Guido (Guy) Fawkes, who has the dangerous job of lighting the fuses to the gunpowder.

Life was quite boring for Arabella until odd things began to happen to her. Suddenly, Arabella and Tom were transported back in time and met William Shakespeare himself when visiting the old Globe Theatre. They had no idea how that happened or how they would get back home.
