Cassius Marcellus Clay was a Kentucky planter, politician, and abolitionist. He freed the slaves on the estate inherited from his father and paid them a wage. Clay argued that no cordial union could exist between liberty and slavery, concluding his speech with, “If you would have peace, be just, for justice is the only peace.”

He called for the liberation of those who were subjected in hopeless bondage and to crush the vampire of slavery that was feeding upon the lifeblood of the Republic.

Emma Goldman (1869-1940) was an anarchist political activist and writer. Here she discusses, inter alia, the split in the revolutionary movement between Bakunin and the Marxists. She recounts her experiences of the Anarchist Congress in Paris in 1900 and in Amsterdam in 1907.

The author was born a slave on a plantation near Wilmington, North Carolina. He discusses the religious meetings he conducted as a slave near Wilmington, including encounters with patrols that attempted to prevent such meetings, and instances of benign social interaction between the races. He also became a distinguished writer and an interpreter of Native American life and customs. The Soul of the Indian is a rare eye-witness account of native religion with its ceremonial and symbolic worship, oral scriptures and view of the spirit world.

Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot), in the service of King Henry VII of England, crossed the Atlantic and reached land in the summer of 1497. This account comprises three reports of contemporary witnesses. It seems likely that Cabot explored the coast of Labrador.

Emma Goldman (1869-1940) was a political activist and writer. She played a key role in the development of the anarchist ideology of the first half of the 20th century. These four speeches against conscription were made by Emma Goldman in 1917.

Burton's Memories of Childhood's Slavery Days (1909) consist of four parts. In the first, ‘Recollections of a Happy Life, Burton recalls her childhood on a plantation in Alabama and her marriage to Samuel Burton. In the second, 'Reminiscences,’ she reflects on emancipation while the third, ‘Vision’ is an account of her conversion. The fourth consists of an essay on Abraham Lincoln, an essay on the ‘race question,’ various poems, and hymns.

Sara Griffith Stanley Woodward (1837-1918) was an advocate for African Americans rights. Representing the Ladies’ Anti-Slavery Society of Delaware, Ohio, she addressed the Convention of Disfranchised Citizens of Ohio at the Columbus City Hall in January 1856. She called upon the delegates to devote themselves with continued and strenuous effort to pursue full citizenship rights.

Sarah Mapps Douglas was an African American lecturer, writer, and fervent abolitionist. Douglas’ address, now commonly referred to as "Sarah Mapps Douglas Urges Support for the Anti-Slavery Cause", made in 1832, is essential Civil War-era rhetoric for the abolishment of slavery. As an address, it is also extremely historically important as one of the only public speeches on the subject made by a black woman.

Frances D. Gage was one of the most significant figures in women’s history that the United States ever produced. Gage was a leading figure in feminism, reformation, and various human rights campaigns in the 19th century. She was also a passionate and vocal support of the abolitionist movement and it was regarding the fight for emancipation of the salves at the time that Gage made her Address to the American Equal Rights Association, delivered at the association’s first anniversary at the Church of the Puritans, New York in 1867.

Hugh O. Pentecost was an American radical minister, anarchist, and Georgist. In this address, first delivered by Pentecost in 1889 at the Unity Congregation in Newark, Boston, he praises the alternative, the outsider, and the vanguards and compares their original ways of living by remaining kindhearted and productive with the ways of Jesus Christ. And he more importantly bridges the gap between anarchy and Christianity with eloquence, persuasive rhetoric, logic, and earnestness.

In this personal narrative, Jourden H. Banks who had been a slave for 29 years criticizes racism and slavery in specific detail, recommending that ex-slaves stand united in leveraging economic and political resources.
