Since the earliest days of the Church, the faithful have sought divine assistance through the use of the litany, which is an alternating form of prayer. The Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Marian litany originally approved in 1587 by Pope Sixtus V. It is also known as the Litany of Loreto from its place of origin, the Shrine of Our Lady of Loreto in Italy. Twelve invocations refer to Mary as Mother whilst six extoll her as Virgin. James Petigru Boyce (1827 - 1888) was the founding President of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and also served as its first professor of Theology. His Abstract of Systematic Theology is a practical textbook for pastors and students. A philosophical introduction on the science of theology is followed by 16 chapters devoted to the study of God. Boyce then proceeds to creation, providence, the fall of man, Christology, salvation, sanctification, and eschatology.

This is Leo Tolstoy's integration of the four biblical gospels into a single account of the life of Jesus. The Gospel in Brief is an intriguing fusion of biblical texts and Tolstoy's own religious views. Tolstoy explains that his goal is a “solution to the problem of life," not a theological or historical statement. He therefore ignores issues like Jesus' genealogy and divinity, focusing instead on the words and teachings of Jesus, stripped of what he regarded as the Church's distortions and focus on dogma and ritual.

Apologia Pro Vita Sua (A Defence of One's Own Life), John Henry Newman's defense of his religious beliefs, was published in 1864 in response to Charles Kingsley of the Church of England after Newman quit his position as the Anglican vicar of St. Mary's, Oxford. From 1833 to 1841 there was friction in the Church of England which culminated in Newman's 1845 resignation as an Anglican vicar and his conversion to Roman Catholicism. Newman's essay responded to attacks from Charles Kingsley of the broad church party, who criticised Newman's conversion.

In 1917, G.K. Chesterton published an essay in response to an English minister’s objection to people sending cigarettes to British soldiers fighting in the trenches of World War I, titled "The Dregs of Puritanism". He writes that a large number of young men were being hurt by shells, bullets, fever, hunger and horror of hope deferred. The “good reverend”, however, was anxious that they should not be hurt by cigarettes.

Benjamin Tucker Tanner (1835 - 1923) was an African American clergyman and editor. He served as a Bishop in the African Methodist Episcopal Church from 1886, and founded The Christian Recorder, an important early African American newspaper. In The Negro in Holy Writ, published in 1900, Tanner shows that the African people are described in the Bible. He argues that the ancient Cushim were the ancient Ethiopians, and that they were Negroes. The book provides evidence for the unity of all mankind.

Thomas Watson (c. 1620 - 1686) was an English Puritan preacher and author. The Lord's Prayer is the third volume in his series of books explaining the tenets of the Christian faith, the first being The 10 Commandments and the second The Apostle's Creed. Watson provides a lengthy and in-depth exposition of each concept or verse of the familiar prayer from Matthew 6. This is a valuable reference for Christians who wish to improve their prayer lives, as Watson derives deep layers of meaning from the simple words of the prayer.

James Denney was a Scottish New Testament scholar, pastor, and theologian (1856 - 1917). The author was convinced that the death of Christ was not given the proper importance in the common Christian mind, measured against its centrality in the New Testament. The purpose of the evangelical and theological work The Death of Christ is thus to explain the place held by the death of Christ in the scriptures, and the interpretation put upon it by the apostolic writers.

Catherine of Siena (March 25, 1347-April 29, 1380) was a mystic, activist, and author who had a great influence on Italian literature and the Catholic Church. Catherine's mystical theology was employed towards practical ends for her own spiritual life and those of others. She used the language of medieval scholastic philosophy in the Dialogue, a poetic and prophetic work. Advocating for continuous, humble prayer, she hears God the Father answering her requests in order to receive help to be saved. Catherine gives special importance to mental prayer, but also recommends vocal prayer.

In the tumultuous days of the Reformation, the centerpiece of Luther’s ministry was his bold biblical preaching. Martin Luther, the reformer, theologian, author and polemicist is well known as hymn-writer, musician, teacher, and pastor to both clergy and laity. However, Luther saw himself as a preacher first. On religious holidays, he preached twice a day. The sermon "Day of St. John the Evangelist" is based on John 21:19-24, about Christ’s imminent death. Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was England's best-known preacher for most of the second half of the 19th century. This sermon, delivered on February 4, 1855, is based on Matthew 12:20: "A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory". The message is one of encouragement, so that believers remain firm in the faith, trusting in God for strength.
