Kenneth Mackenzie, also known as the Brahan Seer or the Coinneach Odhar, was a legendary Scottish clairvoyant. His birth date is traditionally assigned to the early 17th century. The Brahan Seer is often compared to Nostradamus.

Pow-Wows; or Long Lost Friend was published in 1820. John George Hohman (often misspelled as Hoffman) was a Pennsylvania Dutch healer. This work comprises home and folk remedies, as well as spells and talismans.

This sermon by James Smith is based on King David’s words in Psalm 63:1. Smith explains that the object of David's thirst was the Lord, not merely the tabernacle, or its services, or even devotion; but the Lord himself. He states that it is the same with every real Christian - his God is the object of his desire as He has revealed himself as the source of love - and love is the solace and delight of the soul.

Eduard (Édouard) Schuré (1841 in Strasbourg - 1929) was a French philosopher, poet, playwright, and novelist. This book is an esoteric examination of the life of Jesus, who is considered to be the ultimate in a long line of initiates.

JC Ryle states that of all the Christian concepts, the Lord’s Supper might be the most misunderstood. Christ said, "eat, drink: do this in remembrance of me." But Ryle explains that not all of us can be invited to the table and that only those with true faith and a true heart can do so in full understanding of its significance.

Dale discusses the perpetual conflict between Christianity and worldliness. He warns against "the bitter melancholy, this profound discontent with all things in Heaven above and on the earth beneath". George Smith (1840-1876) was an English archaeologist and Assyriologist who first discovered and translated the Epic of Gilgamesh, one of the most ancient works of literature. Smith discovered many more tablet fragments of the flood story, and published his work in "The Chaldean Account of Genesis".

This 1857 sermon by William Bacon Stevens is based on Luke 15:11-32. The moral of the parable unfolds in four stages, the prodigal's departure, the prodigal's degradation, the prodigal's return, and the prodigal's reception. The son comes back in sorrow and humility, feeling unworthy and wanting a low place, but he is received with joy and exultation.

Pascal illuminates the substantial differences between the early church and the Church of today. Formerly, it was necessary to forsake the world in order to be received into the Church, while people now enter the Church at the same time as they enter the world. St Francis of Assisi, born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, was a late-12th/early-13th century Italian friar and preacher. Bernardone came from wealthy beginnings, being part of one of the most affluent families in Assisi, but after a year of captivity after being captured by neighboring city’s army after conflict with Assisi flared up, Bernardone's outlook was much changed.
